Gathering background knowledge about the Medieval time period by studying its science, social hierarchy, primary sources, and daily life helps students better understand The Midwife’s Apprentice and the historical world in which the story takes place. Students use research and evidence to connect historical information to the characters, setting, and events of the novel. Learning about medieval medicine, social classes, beliefs, and the role of midwives allows students to make deeper connections and understand the story more accurately. This process demonstrates academic excellence because students are not simply reading a book, they are analyzing evidence, building knowledge, making meaningful connections, and using what they learn to strengthen their understanding of literature and history.
